Mono or wire trace??
Been working hard the past few weeks out in Westernport for some interesting results from the exact same spots.. week one saw small gummies around the 500mm mark and some pinkies, week 2 plague proportion elephant fish and small gummies, week 3 saw 6 barracuda over 600mm long and this week massive skate and school shark.
My question is given this mixed bag from the exact same spots should I switch from mono leader to wire trace?
The reason iam thinking this is there are obviously a wide range of species it the port which is great but I have been bitten off a number of times over the last few weeks, the latest being a estimated 2m school shark which I got boat side before being bitten off.. I was ready to throw the rod and all overboard and go home after that..

Stick with the mono. Switch to wire and get no bites or run mono and get bitten off a few times. I'll take the second option. Do you use circle hooks? If they do there job properly shouldn't get bitten off.

Gamakatsu IN-LINE circle hooks, no offset on the hook. Which means it’s basically impossible to get a hook up any other way than the jaw.
Wire will spook school sharks, and Gummies too more than not. If you use wire, I’d run a plastic tubing over the whole wire leader.
Stick with Mono.
At this time of year there’s a **** load of Seven Gills around too. I’ve caught 2 in 3 sessions, getting them both to the boat without being bitten off using the hooks mentioned above.

Cheers mate I’ll give it a go, I got some reasonably fine trace that is coated in black I thought this would blend in with the mostly muddy bottom. Might run just a single rod with it as a bit of an experiment along with the rest of my rods running mono see what happens

I have been using brushcutter line, its really hard and not been bitten off yet, and its pretty cheap.

I use the gamakatsu octopus circles, iam guessing it’s just been more a case of bad luck then bad gear by the sounds of it.. think I’ll still try out one wire trace just out of curiosity see what happens
