late report westernport

Post by Nude up » Sat Oct 22, 2016 6:50 pm

Sorry for taking a few days to put this up but I am as crook as a dog with some viral infection of the eyes and throat,
Any way we stay at the stoney point caravan park for 3 days every year with guys from work in memory of one of our fishing mates who died the target snapper the twist is it has to be the smallest.
We got there wed about 1030 unloaded set up camp then as the weather had brightened up put the boats in the water. After a quick chat with lumpy the guy who takes your money and always has the latest info we changed our plans and headed round to elizabeth island .
We anchored in about 25 mt an put 4 rods out pilchards, squid, silver whiting for the first hour all we got was undersize gummies slimey rock cod and big banjos.
The sounder showed good size and the turn of the tide was close I changed one of my rods to a salmon fillet.
14771252767210.jpg[/attachment Bang instant success a 76 cm snapper but that was it a lone soldier on my boat . The other boats all seemed to get a fish a 60cm an 8kg gummie and a 68cm ling.[attachment=0]14771254557521.jpg
By now the other guys from work were arriving we decided to head back and have a beer and bbq.

The next day thursday was a howling northerly we headed over to tortoise head for cover and anchored in gardeners channel for small flathead and more rock cod which to me is normally the water temp is still a little low the rock cod disappear when the water warms up.
By 2pm the wind was very strong so decided to pull the pin and punch our way back to stoney point of the 4 boats out all 6mt and up the race was on the winner nude up by 300 mt I was on and off the throttle the whole waywith only 2 really jarring hits where I missed the throttle the guy with me had never been in water like that and didnt speak much.
Back at the cabin its beer and bbq time we left stoney point about lunch time friday already booked with gary the carvan park owner for next year we just hope the weather gods are on our side thats 2 years of crap weather.

I've had 2 on my boat in the last year or so, one just the other week. Neither were as big as that fella in your photo though.

Sounds like you blokes had a fun trip, which is what it's all about mate. Did Tuna Tube get onto a couple? Round Lizzy island is where I would have recommended, along with the area from cowes to silverleaves, but lizzy island would have been better protected out of those winds. Did I ever give you those co-ords nearby that have done well for me in the past? It's been a tough gig with the weather so far this spring. I'm so over this cold, miserable pommy weather. Lol :)
