well I've been fishing for a while with my dad but haven't been able to catch anything so I guess I'm targeting any salt/fresh water fish but really want to catch a flat head

Let's start with your budget. How much you're willing to spend?

A light graphite rod is nice that can range from $50 up to $500+
The reel is generally lighter as it goes higher in price.

Note, though lighter and stronger, graphite rod can break easily if not handled properly. While fibreglass rod is heavier, it's almost 'unbreakable'.

This Sienna 2500 Quickfire 2-4kg combo is a good beginner combo (for the price) to lure fishing with graphite rod.

A braid line will be perfect, but takes some time to get use to. Can get wind knot etc. Once you're use to it, it's generally better than mono line for what you do.
Assuming landbased for the usual bread and butter species.
8lb or 10lb braid will do and fluorocarbon leader.

If you want to save money then look at the savage gear combos that are sold in a box, most bcf stores have them and they are clearing them for 80 odd bucks.
You get a rod, reel spooled with braided line plus some plastics and jigheads in the box.
Excellent value for beginners!!
