Bait Collecting - 7/6/15
So I was running a bit low on Gummy bait, so thought I would head out for a land based session and see if I could rustle some up. I went down and started fishing about 4:30pm and last light was approx 5:30pm, so just wanted to see what was about for an hour or so.
After hooking 19 sambos without any real size (27-30cm, not great but fine for what I was after) I dropped 2 fish that would have completed my bag. I hooked up to my final fish, thinking, tyvm, when I got totally smoked. The set up i was using (stradic 2500 ci4+/sephia) has skull dragged a 1.3kg sambo in no probs when a seal was chasing it, and I couldnt stop this one. I eventually tightened the drag and thumbed the spool hoping to slow the fish down, as I was rapidly running out of line, but ended busting the fish off. I did see someone else with a fish much bigger than my PB of 1.4kg so I am guessing it was one of those bad boys, what a spew. Next time I go down I will be taking the 9" Catana / 4000 sienna. Ah well.
All in all, was a good way to spend an hour. After the recent hot spots thread, I wont put up a location, but feel free to PM me for info At least I now have a freezer full of vac sealed bait for the next few gumbo sessions.

where? :rofl:bowl wrote:It's already on facebook of where the sambos were going off tonight.!
Early mornings between Brighton and Sandy they come close to the shore. Good size but they scatter easily if you hook one on lure. The other day just before dusk the birds were diving like crazy in Brighton area. This time of year you can catch them in the city piers before dark. Burley hard at night and you will catch them on bait under floats. It will only get better in northern PPB.
OF ALL THE THINGS I LOST, I MISS MY MIND THE MOST.

I don't know much about salmon but if they are at a couple of piers then wouldn't there be a decent chance of finding them off a beach or a rock wall nearby as well, somewhere a bit less crowded?

Keep an eye open for the reports. If they're running there then you could possibly get them from the beach or rocks nearby.

And this is the reason I have stopped posting reports. Where is your local mate? Just an FYI, the pier was at capacity tonight, will be unfishable from now on. lol. I stated I would share info via PM for this reason.FishnMiss wrote:Franga pier mate.

I dont really care, as the fish are either there or not, chances are people that go there tomorrow will get donuts, but still.
