Hi all

Planning on having my first saltwater session in a couple months this weekend, has anyone done/heard of people doing well catching gars around brighton, st kilda or lagoon pier recently? My intention was heading out in the afternoon and targeting some gars, then cutting them up or livelining them for pinkies, flatties or salmon, while also flicking a few plastics and hardbodies. also, what are some solid burley mixes (preferably breadcrumb based) for gars? thanks in advance for any help

cheers

croe

I wrote about burley for gars, but cant find it at present.

The mix should be really fine, and it breaks up into a cloud, some use mashed potato or flour water mixture, can add stimulate to the mix.

Apart from reading fishing reports, another tell tale sign, is the scales that garfish leave on the jetties.

YakDoc (you can find him on Facebook) is a kayak fisho who specialises in gars, shoot him a PM for some advice.

I have caught gars from all 3 of those piers you mentioned mate :)
Mordialloc is another very good one for lb gars.
Choose a nice calm day and take burley and silverfish for bait.
Good luck

Gars caught 11 one day then 11 the next early last week at St Leonards Harbour
Burley was Chicken Pellets soaked in water then added few drops of Tuna Oil then frozen into large blocks -These last abot 20 mins in the water temp we have now.

Croe, with the burley I keep it very simple mate.
I just buy a packet of homebrand bread crumbs and simply just mix it with water and that’s it. I use a small scooper to throw it out every now and again. Does the job for me everytime :)
Cheers

bread crumbs and tuna oil some people only use a little bit of tuna oil but i load my mix up with quite a fair serving (can see a oil slick ) and i do pretty good on the gar,s when i target them .Also some people swear by adding curry powder

Do you go somewhere with a bit of current to disperse the burley or would it work fine at the top of the bay where there isn't much water movement?
