Changing Baits

How long can different baits soak before all the blood/oil/etc washes off & makes it less affective?
Squid seems to last all day whilst Salmon will lose it's colour within minutes (especially with a strong current)...is there a general rule of how often you should freshen up your baits?

I put 2 salmon baits or trreavally straight down over side and cast squid or something 15 meters or so out , if gummy is close it will get smashed in under 30 mins

I go with gut and how things are panning out.

When fishing with "put down" rods for Snaps, we fan out 4 rods (2 each is the law in SA) and try to cast back in the same spots. We change baits about every 15 mins, and the used bait (normally a Pilly) we cube up and turf it in the water along with the minced berley that is in the water. But note, we only change one at a time and a few minutes break between rod/bait checks/change. That way we have a variety of "freshness" amongst the 4 rods. I don't know if that actually matters, we think it does BUT also at night, one rod in at a time makes it easier to manage the deck.

But when lice are around, we change as often as it feels that the baits aren't "laden" with lice. The Snaps seem to take lice in a bait but not if it's chocoblock full of lice.

And no surprise , , , , the fresh baited rods, seem to get hit first.

If you've got the bait, go with your gut mate and turn them over. If you're concerned about breaking the scent trail, here's a real tough solution for ya...assuming you are running 4 outfits, just pull them in 1 at a time. That way you've always got 3 baits in the water at any one time, therefore always have a scent trail.

No general rule for me...I’ll cast out a fresh bait and if I notice it’s had a hit or a few bites I’ll check it and if it looks alright I’ll cast it straight back out. If not, take it off and just put on another fresh one. Simple
