Gar chunks/fillets presentation

Post by passport1980 » Tue May 19, 2015 4:31 pm

Hey folks. Just mixing it up later tonight with the Bayside pinkie posse. Any advice on best way to bait up/presentation for Garfish? Maybe in chucks and some small fillets. I am pretty dry in the tackle department, but I have some new 2/0 Octopus hooks. They seem to work for me.

Any help would be great, as I am hitting low tide in........................5 hours!!!

(Rod got smashed last night. A real healthy pinkie, which I have been looking for lately. Unluckily for me, I had to use last minute Kmart jarvis walker hooks. This isn't the first time. knob.

I treat them like an extra long pilly. Cut into thirds and use the tail and head bits then cut the middle up for burley. Or just cut the whole thing into chunks and pin through the spine with an appropriate sized circle

the fillets work well for smaller species but for pinkies I would use chunks as basti has suggested

Gar for bait went down a treat. I got to the spot the last of the run out. I quickly set up, putting two fillets of gar on a paternoster. 2 minutes in the 8ft light rod gets hammered. Fish on. 31 cm pinkie. Promising. Very promising.

Lots of action for the next half hour. I moved left, fishing the newly exposed rocks as the tide went out. Fish on. Just under sized so back he went. I promised the missus a feed, so I stuck it out until I got another keeper around the same size. Still searching for the bigger pinkies. But I am sure I get one soon.

I love Bayside. There are so many spots and after a few years I am yet to fully explore the area.

I'd you want the bigger fish. Fish bigger baits. The smaller ones will smash the snack sized baits everytime...
With gars. I use small chunks whole on a hook. No filleting cut a piece iff and on the hook.
I use a longshank and usw some baitmate on the shank so the buggers cant get them off easily

I will have to change it up next time and see how it pans out. Thanks.
