Landbased Kingies

Hi everyone,

I have a 9ft 10-50g zenaq paired with a stella 5000 spooled with 30lb braid which I use for flinging big metals off the surf. Since reading some of Dougie's adventures off the rocks, I thought I might try for a kingy this summer at some ledges towards the otways. I have a few spots in mind that I've fished before for salmon, wrasse, sweep :ft: etc etc.. I own some long cast shallow xrap's, but could any of you recommend me any other metals/ poppers/stickbaits I could use for kings. Any other advice I'd appreciate heaps.

cheers,
ro :-D

Nice rod and reel you got there.
I never caught kingfish, so I got no much experience. But I heard people are catching kings in summer off the rocks in wilson prom. Not sure about the Otways.
The guy at Compleat Angler told me a while ago (when I tried to get a kingie), sluggos plastic is good when they're a bit shy. Kiwis use them a lot I heard. May not suitable for the rocks though.
Good luck and let us know.

I am certainly no expert but I've caught a few, I'd go the bait route honestly. If you can balloon out a squid you're probably in with a much better shot than lures. Only one I caught on a lure was a micro kingy I got on a Tsunami Slimwave that I was jigging with at the prom.

It's a low tide spot only but Point Roadknight looked like a decent spot for them when I went past on the kayak, there's a bit of a current break where the current running along the coast hits the sheltered water in the bay and I've seen kings holding in similar spots elsewhere (like Wilson's Prom). It's also pretty deep and reefy in close too so there's plenty of structure for them.

I'd be ballooning out a squid as well for a better chance of landing one.

As for lures.
GT ICE CREAM
BUSTED SLUGS
NOMAD MADSCAD
NOMAD RIPTIDE
RAPALA STICKBAITS

Pretty much ones that are similar will also work I'd think.

I'll be focusing on them this weekend

Only have 2 frozen squid though 😭 and they are big bastards too, might just have to settle for strip baits rather than whole baits.

Would tommies work too?
