The kingies put on a show

I'm up in NSW, was wandering the breakwall and saw a big school of scared herring. Stopped to watch them and guess what was stirring them up? I have tried to upload some video but not sure if it worked.

And so yes, I got my gear out an had a crack at getting one but I couldn't interest them at all on topwater lures. And I couldn't even catch the herring to use as livies as they were too frightened to look at a baited sabiki. So none for me sadly.

They actually hung around for a few days and I saw them a couple of times. The locals didn't seem to notice or care much. Or they know that they are too smart to be caught and just ignore them.

Oh wow! That'll never happen here in VIC.
I'd try to cast sluggo plastic on them or a big lunker city's paddle tail.

I’m really on a bit of a family holiday so my gear is limited to what I keep up here. I had a 10-15kg rod and a Saragossa 5000 that would handle the pull but land based around structure is always gonna be difficult. I’ve only caught them from a boat in fairly open water. People do chase them up here land based and I believe land them but they have specialised gear for the area. 10-12’ rods for casting big lures, gaffs on long poles. They seem to fish in teams of 2 or 3 to help land em also. I threw stickbaits, shallow xrap and gt icecreams at them but they only wanted herring. Could drag em right over their heads at 2’ deep and they just ignored it. Still great to watch them round up the baitfish and then smash though the middle of them. Big bust ups every couple of minutes.

To be honest I didn’t even care if I landed one, I would have been happy to hookup and then lose a $25 lure along with a kingy!

On the upside. Plenty of sand whiting off the beach to be caught.

It's pretty cool to watch them come in and how nervous all the bait gets even before you can see them

Wow really?
I don't have a boat and never caught kingfish, still in the bucket list.
This gives me hope! (Apart from the kingi sightings in Docklands 2 yrs ago)
