Male Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii) are known to provide parental care to both eggs and larvae for up to 20 days. Over three consecutive years, Alan Couch (University of Canberra) and colleagues took samples of Murray cod larvae from six sites along the Murrumbidgee River, and used genetic analysis to assess the assess their relatedness. They found multiple full sibling pairs, suggesting that males were mating with the same female over multiple years.

The authors conclude: "For the first time, we show multi-year pair bonding in a wild freshwater fish. This will have important conservation and management implications for the species. This approach could provide insights into many behavioural, ecological and evolutionary questions, particularly if this is not a unique case."
