yarrambat lake 26/9

Post by fishmagnet » Fri Sep 26, 2014 5:59 pm

8yr old brother wanted me to take him for a fish (he's never caught a fish before) so i took him to yarrambat to hopefully get him a trout. after an hour we had nothing but suprisingly he wasnt very bored. i let him throw burley out and taught him to cast so that kept him entertained. finally we had a bite and i set the hook and let him reel it in. taught him the 'lift and wind' technique and he picked up on it well. i netted it and he was stoked! it was a 25cm rainbow.

half an hour later BANG the bells ring and im on this time. brother does a very good job of netting him aswell. another similar size rainbow. with 10 minutes to go before dad was due to pick us BANG! this time i let him hook it. i tell him to lift the rod up to set the hook. he uses the lift and wind technique all by himself and i net him. again he was stoked.

one things for sure, he's gonna be a gun fisherman when he's older. all fish where caught on sherbet powerbait and where released for other kids to catch.

cheers sam

Hi Sam,
Your young brother will always remember who helped him catch his first fish. Something to be proud of mate.

Bigger trout than I've ever caught, so I'm impressed.

I was there today for about 3 hours, used sherbet power bait, not a single bite. What did you use for burley?

Can you also describe the rig, I used a hook connected to a swivel which is connected to main line. A bean sinker above the swivel which allows the trout nugget to be buoyant

Catching stockies i've had great success on pink powerbait, 1 metre or so under a quill float with a single split shot 20cm from the hook, smallest possible hook I think i've used size 10 suicide and size 14 mosquito hooks.
