Cairn Curran yabbies
Cairn Curran yabbies
Hi everyone.
I'm new here and I'm looking for some advice. I'm heading to Welshman's Reef over the weekend to target Yellas, Redfin and Cod. I plan to set some yabbie nets while out on the boat.
My question is, how deep should I set my hoop nets? Of course I'm looking for yabbies for bait and maybe a feed.
Do yabbies live in deep water? Let's say between 3-5 meters or should I go more shallow??
Thanks in advance

Re: Cairn Curran yabbies
well they definitely live in shallow water.
but i'd say they will also live in upto 5m no probs either, used to catch them in hoop nets as a kid in 2-3m+.

Hi Bentrod
Yabbies at Cairn Curran can be in some random places several meters deep. Just keep moving the nets around until you get onto some.
Garden worms were working on the weekend on Yellowbelly so might be worth having some of them as a backup too.
Good Luck!

If you are fishing from a boat, cruise the shoreline until you find "Yabby Holes" on the waters edge or in shallow water - Drop your nets in 2 to 3 meters of water - Check hourly.

Thanks for the tip Russell.
Another question for you, are there shrimp there as well? I’ve fished Cairn Curran a lot but never yabbied or gone for shrimp.
What’s the best baits for both species?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Cairn Curran yabbies
best baits for yabbies- a can of tuna or any old meat you don't want.
best baits for shrimp- a can of tuna or you can use dried dog food. iv even caught them by just putting some gum leaves in the trap.
check the traps every 20 mins to 1 hour.

Best bait I have used for Yabby's = Velvet Soap - Old School - Do not forget to put some fresh gum leaves in the trap.
