Swains Reef check list

Post by Kimtown » Wed Jun 01, 2022 7:32 pm

My 7 night trip to the Swains reef is closing in. Only 5 more months, getting excited

I’ve put together a check list of fishing gear I need to take, feel free to have a browse over it and let me know if I’ve missed anything crucial!

Rods & Reels (duh)

Lures:
Soft vibes
80g & 120g Stick baits
Soft plastics
120g and 180g poppers
GT Ice creams

General tackle:
Heap of small random sized ball sinkers
6oz ball sinkers
8oz ball sinkers
50lbs leader
80lbs leader
100lbs handline
5/0 hooks
8/0 hooks
Squid prongs
Swivels
Snap swivels
Sabiki bait jigs
Single strand 200lb wire

Tools & misc:
Baloons
Sea anchor
Pliers
Knives
Gloves
Lip grips

Personal gear:
Clothing
Phone and charger
Wallet (will be fat before the trip and moths coming out of it by the end)
Towels
Toiletries
Kwells
Sunscreen
Wide brimmed hat
Fishing shirts
Snorke, mask & fins
Sunnies
Stubby holder
Go-Pro
Laptop (50-50 on this one, would be good to upload footage of an evening and sit around watching, but probably overkill)

Hey that’s pretty cool. I’d actually rather that than a broad brim hat. They tend to be really annoying in the wind. I usually wear peaked caps anyway.
Cheers

I am white as **** and those things are a life saver for long days on the water. They pull up so you just have a little eye slot that your sunnies will cover up.

For the laptop something to consider is how much footage you can store on your sd cards. Its grim if you get to the backend of a trip and realise you've already filled all your cards and don't have a way to clear them out

Yeah good point, off the top of my head it’s 128gb and I only have one card. That’s probably like 2 days of filming :/

Edit: it’s 64gb, just checked. Yeah I’ll either need wayyyy more cards or my laptop.

Probably some 150 and 200lb leader I'd suggest.

A mate was saying that too, I thought it might have been overkill for GT but perhaps not?

On a serious note.
Is this a bring your own gear charter? And is there there somewhere local or perhaps an arrangement made to be able to source sinkers and the likes locally?
Its going to weigh a bit by the time you include sinkers and the likes.

Definitely take spare sd cards if you plan on recording your trips or make sure the laptop has plenty of spare memory. Having done the whole transfer to laptop quite a few times now, I would advise multiple memory cards if you can afford it, its a lot easier specially after a big day's fishing to come back and then start transferring footage onto the laptop.
