Ending the Season with a bang.

Post by DougieK » Tue Apr 30, 2024 9:58 pm

The weather is turning. The kings have slowed down. The current is running from the south and we're getting more and more Southerly winds and rain.

I wandered out after work this morning looking for a relaxing afternoon on the ledge. We haven't seen a good fish for about a month now but I still took the gear out.

After a couple of hours of not much happening I stopped slinging lures and let my livey swim about, and reflected on what a great season it's been.

I landed 91 kingfish from this ledge since November.

Dropped a PB trying to get it up onto the rocks.

Witnessed my first land based marlin.

Got 7 of my mates onto their first land based kings.

I've probably fished upwards of 70 days in 5 months.

Spent way too much money on gear that I carry around and never use.

Despite all of this, I haven't actually landed a fish I could hold up and say was an achievement.

As I'm day dreaming my outside livey rod doubles over and the drag starts screaming. Rushing down the rocks I pick it up and strike into what I know is going to be a good fish.

Boom. PB longtail solo.

The stella 6000 with PE 3 shimano braid didn't falter on my PE5 ocea plugger. Despite being significantly lighter than what most guys fish with up here, it handled the longtails 2 blistering runs and big arc fighting pattern comfortably. Fight lasted about 15 minutes and featured two enormous runs followed by a heap of fancy footwork to get it into a spot I could tail grab it because I didn't have a gaff.

Absolutely stoked with this one.

Bloody well done I'd be happy to do that out of a boat let alone off the rocks .
And off a 6000 stella.
And here's me thinking you were a DAIWA saltiga bloke .

Thank you. I also have an expedition 5500 and a 4000 and 14000 certate.

Honestly the new certate is an absolute weapon and probably as good of a choice as a stella.

I am a fan of both companies. This little reel fills the gap between a salmon reel and a kingfish reel, and is perfect for long stints of highspeed spinning. PE3 ocea is a 49lb line and the 6000 fits 400m of it almost perfectly. There is no need to cast a heavy 14000 reel for anything other than the big big kings around here. This is a comfortable middle ground.

Great work Doug! Epic numbers for the season and a great fish to end things with.
