Merrimbula/lakes entrance

Post by Lightningx » Sat Jul 20, 2019 8:04 pm

Hi guys,

Tomorrow the missus and I are off to merrimbula first thing in the morning and will be up there for 4 nights and staying in lakes entrance on the way back for a couple of nights.
Won’t be taking the boat up so will be landbased. The boats getting a service now.
We have been up there before and I know a few great spots to fish but any other advice would be much appreciated :P

Cheers,
LX.

Merimbula wharf or eden wharf nearby is good for deep water and chance of bigger fish (e.g. bonito). At Merimbula you can also try the platform at the big bridge going into the town. On the other side of the bridge at the boat ramp is also good, might be big winter whiting around. Guessing there will be salmon on the beaches too.

Haven't really been there in winter though so it's based on my summer experience

Lakes get the water taxi to run you over to the flagstaff jetty. Take metal lures and a good casting rod. Walk over the dunes to the eastern rock wall. Stand on the beach and cast into the big hole next to the entrance wall. Should be salmon in there. https://lakes-explorer-sea-safari-water ... m=referral
There's nothing . . . absolutely nothing . . . half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats.

So we arrived around 3 and checked into our Air BnB and after a short rest from a 7 hour drive decided to go for a short spin session. Turns out it was a good idea as we landed a couple of beauties. Both taken on 40 gram Halco streaker metals :P
Hopefully some more action tomorrow :)

Day 2 and what a beautiful day! Woke up to flat calm conditions and drove into town and got a coffee and went for another spin session around 11 am with a high tide at 12:09.

Started off fairly slow but this time my missus was the first one to get a hook up and then we realised there was a school of big salmon right in front of us as I could see some jumping out in the distance.
Both hooked up but I dropped mine last minute. Eventually managed to get a few and a big tailor as well :P

The school didn’t hang around long as I saw a dark shadow come cruising through which looked like a seal to me.

Might try something different and go for a bait session later tonight after dinner.
We got back and took a stroll down to the wharf to see if anything was happening. Was full of young kids catching some yellowtail scad and Luderick.
