Salmon on Plastics - 17 June 2023

Hey everyone,

Quick flick along the river's head on the run in slack high tide.
Good clarity.

Between two pulled in easily 20+ fish over two hours.
Biggest went 45cm on the 3" Zman Minnowz, rest went 20-30cm on the 2.5" slim swimz.
Great session overall.

Are Sambos preferring placcies to slugs atm?
Going to try both, but I'm new to slugs - got a few Nomad Ridgebacks in 20g to trial.

Plastic is all rounder. Can be used on the bottom, slow/fast retrieve, or mid or top. Good searching lure and see where they're feeding. But not covering as much area compared to casting heavy slugs.

If its not surf fishing, i usually start with plastic. Then slugs.
On the surf, definitely slugs. For more distance, to cover more areas, etc.

Going minimalist - just taking one rod (10-25g lure) to try for squid, and then for fish on placcies and practice with slugs.

Yeah clarity has been pretty mixed with these winds, Clifton Springs was clear on the high tide - dirty on the low.
Barwon has been clean recently.

In this spot they've been preferring the plastics, or micro-jigging 5-10g, fast action either way.


If you're not needing to cast out far, I reckon plastics work best. Microjigs you can work quite fast and aggressive either jigging or a fast win ding retreive. Bigger slugs for the surf, I stick to 10g - 25g.
