Barwon Heads Australian Salmon 20/06/2022

Post by Andrews » Tue Jun 21, 2022 12:54 pm

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to put together this report for quick flick I had yesterday chasing some Australian Salmon along Ocean Grove/ Barwon Heads.
I was also testing out my new rod and the titanium handle grip, both were a dream to fish with.

Conditions:
Sunny, medium strength N wind, with a clear strong run in-tide.
Fished 1.30 - 2.30.

The gear:
Daiwa Seabass 9'6, 4-8kg, 7-35g
Daiwa Frearms 2500, 10lb braid, 30lb leader.
Fished 3" paddle tails on a 1/4, 3o jig head. Natural silver colour.

Started the session by scouting Ocean Grove side of the Barwon Bridge, despite the mid- run in tide it was too shallow and didn't have any gutters.

Made the decision to head over to the other side of the Barwon Bridge and fish the mouth of the river.
This was the right call as it was much deeper with an increasing water flow.

Starting with the soft plastic, I was flicking up the current before letting the jig sink 1-2M, then actively winding at a consistent speed.
Within 15 minutes, we had a school of 15 or so salmon chasing the lure before the first hookup.

This salmon started running down current and after tightening the drag was an awesome fight as it kept attempting to dive amongst the kelp.
This was the first of two salmon landed and the largest at 47CM.

After bleeding the fish, the very next cast, and we are on, again they chased and as it got closer to the pier the bigger ones peeled off, I then slowed the wind and the smaller fish of the group took it. Decent 35CM fish.

The wind picked up, and the clouds came overhead, called it quits.

Highlight of the day was testing the rod and handle grip, the length of the rod is perfect as you can cast out that little further and hit the calmer water on the otherside of the channel. This was key to hooking up. The rod is light, comfortable to use and an all round treat. The handle grip is awesome, I love the titanium ball design of the knob and it's just easier for me than a t grip.

A couple of nice sambos mate.
I love casting metals for them and also catching them with plastics!
The new gear looks great 😃
Cheers 👍🏻

Great effort and report. Was there much weed coming in with the run in tide?

Cheers Fisho!

Thanks Lightningx, I hooked a bigger model I reckon 50-60cm which went screaming off against the thumping current, jumped and then turned before spitting the hook. Defintely keen for another session this week.

Thanks Senior, clarify was super clean with the occasional clump of weed, pretty clean otherwise.

Cheers Ben!

Thanks mate, I've been thinking of going to try for some whiting from there. I might bring a few lures as well I think

Solid idea, they get a few good kgw during slack, or on the left hand side of the pier where it's a little calmer. They were pulling out just legal bay trout left and right when I was there.
