I finally succeeded recently using a running sinker rig with 2 kernels of corn on a very small hook (size 10? a bit bigger than what I use for garfish). I think the secret might have been throwing in the leftover corn from the past few trips, but haven't got any more since.

I normally cast out, close bail arm before it sinks, then leave it alone with the line slack. When the line starts to go tight (it goes pretty quick!) then lift the rod and you're on. I actually missed a few times where I left too much slack, where I saw the line start moving, decided to wait until the rod buckled, but the carp had managed to steal the corn and swam away. Rebaited, cast in same spot with less slack, and within 5 mins he was back on.

The key to success this time of year seems to be fishing structure (reeds or submerged objects).
Thats where the bigger fish are hiding and you will find that your probably at the highest chance of landing a giant this time of year.
Ive landed 3 or 4 fish between 4 and 8 kg in the last week or so doing this as well as a few of your average fish.
This time of year itll be quality over quantity

your're also spot on, 2 corn kernels is the way to go in my experience.

I use a size 6 kl hook and pins them in the corner of the mouth 9 times out of 10

These hooks are dynamite, I second this recommendation.

Took my bike in for a service on Friday and I still haven't gotten it back yet! Yesterday the weather was a bit crap, but today was primo fishing weather! Not wanting to catch PT, but wanting to catch a fish, and willing to go for a short stroll, I did what I haven't done for a long time - fish the 'local' section of the creek in Burwood. I haven't fished it much since I've found more 'profitable' sections of the creek around the Glen Iris area. It has been mentioned before that Burwood is a difficult place to fish - and it is - compounded by the 'public' area, dogs, dog walkers, joggers, and the general unwillingness of the Carp to bite, but there are Carp there. Nearly all my catches in the early days of this thread came from the Burwood area, and I will always remember it as the place that not only ignited this thread, but my urban fishing career!

Anyway, todays session mimicked a lot of my early days and my fishing escapades in general - went down the creek, started getting bored, thought about heading home when I got a slight tap on the rod then BANG! Not the biggest Carp I've caught this season (on the contrary, probably the smallest), but put up a great fight and I was just happy I got something.

P.S. In other news, one of my telescopic rods finally snapped (I'd like to say on a big Carp, but no, it was on a snag after already damaging it) and has been replaced my a 10ft telescopic 'surf' rod from K-Mart. So when I get a bit more mobile, hopefully I can tame a beast or two...

Nice one mate

Got these two out of my local last weekend - a 75cm Carp and a smaller mirror. Finally got to make use of my 'oversized' 10ft telescopic rod, which is exactly why I got it - to give myself a little bit more control when tackling the big berthas. Time to start stacking the odds in my favour and not the Carps. I don't care what anyone says, Carp are great fun on ANY GEAR. I'd much rather catch one than have one get away. The terminal tackle is still the same, just with a bigger rod and heavier line...
