Would’ve been a mighty sight for sure.
It’s crazy how far they travel and spawn.
So much has changed now
what are your thoughts on introduced 'pest' species?

They are when they are 2 or 3 kilo'srb85 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 15, 2022 5:40 pmI’d be interested to compare but I think our natives should take precedence over introduced species.Seniorfisho wrote: ↑Tue Mar 15, 2022 8:18 amIf you ever get the chance to catch one, you'll forget all about our native fish. I've caught quite a few, as well as Peacock Bass, stripers, and a heap of Talapia, nothing we have comes close to those fish.
There used to be tilapia in hazelwood poundage weren’t anything special to be honest.

Fairly certain a large bunch of native fish populations took a hit with changed environmental flows.
Probably need to get an actual scientist to comment on the impact.
Sure, we can turn the clock back to a pre carp era, but along with the carp came in other changes to the system too.
In an ideal world, none of this would have happened and the Murray would still be like it was in ancient times, but can’t change things now.
It’s not just the Murray, it’s the same story in a lot of rivers.
We can look for scape goats, but man is to be blamed in the end.
There is always more to learn , fish to catch , places to see and friends to make.

Agree a lot of waterways have suffered due to human alterations.smokin_reels wrote: ↑Tue Mar 15, 2022 7:44 pmrb85 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 15, 2022 7:17 pmSo the food source disappeared with damming.smokin_reels wrote: ↑Tue Mar 15, 2022 7:05 pmIf I had to guess, by snacking on native fish that roamed wild and free. Eradicating carp won’t solve all these issues no doubt but reducing their population will reduce pressure on other fish species. Don’t think they are noxious pest for no reason.

Yup for sure. Especially in what should be native dominated water ways.
Closed of clay puddles in housing estates, maybe not so much.

There's very few species of fish in Victoria that can't be caught in the yarra.
If you were to write a laundry list of species that people want to catch it can all be done between warrandyte and the mouth.

You walked the carp pools on the north eastern side of the lake? They are crawling with carp. So much so you can actively jag them in there... looks like a chocolate big m.smokin_reels wrote: ↑Mon Mar 14, 2022 7:00 am4liters wrote: ↑Sun Mar 13, 2022 7:11 pmThe poor water quality is from the carp stirring up the mud on the bottom. But they either can’t seem to breed enough of them ,
Or they just get picky about sticking then into certain pockets for biodiversity reasons.
Plus a lot of these stinky suburban holes are such poor water q , only the Ferals can survive
Unsure about that.
Carp love weedy ponds and Lilly pads
They can survive in mud holes.
I reckon they just catch a bad rep for water q.
Albert park lakes got a pretty high carp density and crystal clear water.
I think it’s down to bio filtration, flow and poor oxygen.
Especially round the new estates, they just dig a hole and fill it lol
The lake itself is fairly clean mainly to do with the substrate.

Those carp pools are actually bio filtration thats been setup for in-flows coming into the lake.
Its mucky by design.

Re: what are your thoughts on introduced 'pest' species?
Well there you go. Interesting.
Here's a couple "lakes" near me. 2 with carp in them and one that as far as I can tell doesn't have them.
Massive colour difference. With the rhs one being near crystal clear
