How to find carp spots

What do you guys look for in a carp spot?

Where I've found carp, the water doesn't need to be too deep but at least deep enough to not be able to see the bottom. Wider parts of rivers and creeks seem better but I've found them in places that are as narrow as 5m. Pools need to be a reasonable length between rapids (I have noticed there aren't any carp in the short stretches between rapids, but these spots are also usually very shallow).

I've done a lot of exploring lately using google maps and seen a few carp around but haven't caught any since the 5km lockdown ended. I've seen so many carp on the surface now (mostly at GC and suburban lakes), and there's even been a time where I literally threw a piece of corn (hookless) within 5cm of a carp's face only for it to be completely ignored.

Also do you find certain situations where bread is better than corn?

In my experience bread can definitely be more productive than corn but I haven't yet really cracked the code as to what conditions make bread the better option. What I like about bread though is you can cast a balled up piece of dough on a hook quite far without the need for a sinker, allowing you to fish the bottom weightless.

As far as spots go I like to keep my eye out for rubbish on the bank, especially empty tins of corn kernels and discarded bits of line. My theory goes if there's people fishing there then there must be fish to catch. I also prefer fishing spots where you can't see the bottom but recently I've been watching the carp take my bait in water less than a metre deep.

Slow moving or still water is a must, though.

During the lockdown Cam and I scouted a local lake that we didn't know existed until we saw it in a real estate ad. Probably 15m x 40m, 30cm deep and you can watch carp cruising around all day.

Literally any suburban waterway that has dirty water.

That's what everyone says but I've just been finding them impossible to catch! I like exploring and finding new spots though so even if I don't catch anything its still nice to get out and wet a line.

Next time I see a carp on the surface I'm definitely trying a piece of unweighted bread. It's hard to get much casting distance though without squeezing the bread into a ball.

Yeah it was pretty fat I nearly lost the rod. I had my back towards the rod and I heard my drag go of and my reel was in the water and only just got the butt of the rod. Unfortunate my go pro died just before so couldn’t get it on my YouTube
