Of course I woke up at 1:00, then tossed and turned for an hour, debating with myself whether to go fishing early, or try to get back to sleep. Once the supporting side (to go fishing) had pitched its case, I jumped in the car at 2:00 and headed towards St Leonards.
I arrived at 3:30, launching not long after into calm water. It took about 2 hours to land the first 3 squid, while I watched the dark wall of cloud/fog start taking over the clear night sky. Being solo in the kayak, I was ready to pull the pin if the fog reached me, but the fog never made it to my area. Although I had the fish finder/gps and a compass on board, I wasn’t going to take the risk of staying out without clear sight of the shore.
The fishing picked up as the run-out tide slowed right down, coinciding with first light/sunrise. The fishing went hot over the sunrise period, picking up 6 squid in about 15 minutes, things then settled down, and closed the bag off with number 10 about 40 minutes later. Headed back to shore, cleaned the squid and off to work. The big squid weren’t there, but I was happy with a couple of bait sized, and the rest good eating sizes. The Yamashita NAEBA caught 9 of the 10 squid (my go-to jig)
