St Leonards 27th August
On Saturday I had to start work at 10am, so I planned to wake up at 4:00, fish from 5:30-8:00, then head to work.
Of course I woke up at 1:00, then tossed and turned for an hour, debating with myself whether to go fishing early, or try to get back to sleep. Once the supporting side (to go fishing) had pitched its case, I jumped in the car at 2:00 and headed towards St Leonards.
I arrived at 3:30, launching not long after into calm water. It took about 2 hours to land the first 3 squid, while I watched the dark wall of cloud/fog start taking over the clear night sky. Being solo in the kayak, I was ready to pull the pin if the fog reached me, but the fog never made it to my area. Although I had the fish finder/gps and a compass on board, I wasn’t going to take the risk of staying out without clear sight of the shore.
The fishing picked up as the run-out tide slowed right down, coinciding with first light/sunrise. The fishing went hot over the sunrise period, picking up 6 squid in about 15 minutes, things then settled down, and closed the bag off with number 10 about 40 minutes later. Headed back to shore, cleaned the squid and off to work. The big squid weren’t there, but I was happy with a couple of bait sized, and the rest good eating sizes. The Yamashita NAEBA caught 9 of the 10 squid (my go-to jig)

Great work mate to go out there and get a bag on your own is truely rewarding.

Re: St Leonards 27th August
Well done.
The NAEBA is a go to jig for a few I know.
Great to see a few more have started to get out and enjoy fishing again. Can only get better from now on as the weather gets more friendlier.
Cheers

Re: St Leonards 27th August
Agreed, hopefully we will start seeing more reports of catches as we head out of winter. Usually I get on the water prepared to target anything, this time it was nice to just take 2 rods and a handful of jigs, keeping it simple.purple5ive wrote: ↑Wed Aug 31, 2022 7:55 pmWell done.

Re: St Leonards 27th August
The whole time I was out there, there was a person on the pier fishing, they probably couldn’t sleep either and made the same call. I’ve been flat out working lately, so it was good to have some time out there to myself, and take a feed home to my familyLightningx wrote: ↑Wed Aug 31, 2022 8:59 pmWas a good decision to get up and go

Great session there mate and a beautiful bit of coastline to fish. It won’t be long till the big spring squid start showing up. Can’t beat some fresh calamari.

Re: St Leonards 27th August
I was hoping to have been lucky enough to catch an early arrival, but it wasn’t to be. It’s my second time fishing St Leonards, for me it is worth travelling the extra 30 mins passed the Avalon/waterfront area
