St Leonards Calamari - 13/4/2022

Post by Andrews » Wed Apr 13, 2022 6:47 pm

Hey everyone,
Just a quick report from the St Leonard's pier now the weather has started to cool.

CONDITIONS:
Strong run in-tide
Perfect water clarity
Heavy cloud turning full overcast, no visible moon
90%+ full moon
Fished 5:30-7:30PM.
Medium strength, cold wind chill from the S

Started the session casting the outside of the pier targeting the edge of the weed beds using a white 2.5 jig and really didn't have any success apart from one medium-sized squid. They were definitely not actively feeding, as we had a few follows, but not a single take.

As the clouds came over and last light approached, we moved under the light casting the shadows with an aggressive tip and run action before pausing right before the lit up water. Within 10 minutes I had a solid squid pull some drag and I told my two friends to cast either side which resulted in a three-way hook-up. Lasted a good two minutes and landed six between us.

They backed off and within five minutes we caught the stragglers, 9 between us, and then started smashing some smaller hoods 15 cm-20 cm. Ended up with six. The S wind picked up, so we called it quits, kept 3 and gave away the other 3 between the two friends.

Happy with the results of my first night session this year, and enjoyed playing around with my new UV torch.
Tight lines all,
