St Leonards Calamari - Bag Out 17/12/2021
Hey everyone,
Another weekly update on the calamari at St Leonards Pier, this week has seen the calamari return in strong numbers with average hoods of 25cm. Clean water with lower winds have been the favourite getting the calamari hyped and with large numbers of baitfish, focusing the edge of the weed beds into sandy drop offs have been the go.
Fished 17/12/2021 5:30-7:30PM
Overcast evening, clean water with light S/E winds, slow run out tide.
Red jig as always.
With prior knowledge of the squids behaviour in recent weeks, I focused casting over the weed beds, giving it a few whips then letting it sink deeper and rest in the water over the sandy drop off. Within five casts, I managed to hook into the first squid, which followed by a squid every 2 minutes until I hit five.
They then started to stop, and seeing baitfish on the inside of the pier I decided to see if there were any squid sitting further back picking off the fish. First cast and we're on again, a good group of 8-9 squid and three casts later, another three squid before they became a little hesitant and moved off - only to never return!
Moved back onto the other side, now the winds blowing E and using that current snagged the remainder of my bag. Two hours, ten squid and we're done. Great meeting a few blokes from the forum.
Cheers,
Andrew

@ Lightningx Thanks mate, they've been a good run!
@Joker91, Thank you! Hope to get a few more befor the holidays - wind has been the biggest challenge.
@Matthew Drako, Awesome hearing that mate! Yeah I think I fished that same day, managed 3 5:30-6:30 they've been weird this week, I reckon it's all this wind. Great that the water is clean from the W/S winds, but when it's blowing consistently at 40km/hr, what can you do. haha I agree with the white jig, I've been finding that overcast days red has been the go, full sun evenings white.
