St Leonards Pier Calamari - Great numbers 27/11/2021

Post by Andrews » Wed Nov 24, 2021 4:06 pm

Hey everyone,

Quick update on the calamari being caught @ St Leonards Pier, the past week we've had great numbers and smaller sized hoods. Mornings and Evenings are the go-to for productive sessions. Snapper are on the bite in the evenings.

SUNDAY 21/11/2021
WEATHER: 16C LIGHT CLOUDS, HIGH TIDE, CLEAN RUN IN
TIME: 5:30-7

The squid this week have been hesitant in the lighter hours, and then fire on the setting sun or when the wind kicks up. BRIGHT COLOURS have been the favourite.

Knowing the squid were smaller and hesitant I went for a hopping action for the longer sink, which proved highly effective. Casting out over the weed and then going for a deep sink over the sandy bottom accounted for 5 squid. Saw another 5 caught between two mates. Three best colours this sessions were the RED, ORANGE and PINK. Saw a few using natural colours with zero luck.

MONDAY 22/11/2021
WEATHER: 20C GLASS OUT /LIGHT CLOUDS, HIGH TIDE, CLEAN RUN OUT
TIME: 5:30-7

Hit the red jig again and once that wind kicked up @ 6PM they were on the bite.
I started pulling them in one every 2 minutes, which is great when they're really hesitant touching the squid without committing. Two blokes to me couldn't get a bite on the white jig, both swapped to orange and they were on. Mix of sizes all small to medium. Ended up with 6, blokes either side of me caught 3/3 each. Super great session.

nice report mate. i was also down monday evening arriving around 7:30pm and was limited to the concrete half of the pier, further down was packed lol. i arrived slightly late judging by what people were saying, i managed 2 in 20 mins, with one being a good 20-25cm hood both on white. after that last one i caught i didn't see another caught on the pier.

Cheers mate! I might have walked past you as your were turning up (checked my phone and these photos were taken ~8:15). Yeah it was definitely pretty busy for a weekday, Monday none the less! It's always interesting how they can disappear as quickly as they turned up, glad you were able to get two before they dipped haha!

I was there Tuesday night n last night, both session I bagged out. White jig in 3.0 did all the damage, slow lift and drop was all I did and gradually wound in the slack. Best tide was the rising and just on sundown, they go berserk. Nice report as always mate

Orange/red is definitely a must have. And white ofc.
Good stuff :tu:
Have you ever got a donut trip catching squid? You definitely mastered it and mastered the area too.

Kenle, great hearing that mate! Yep that sunset has been crazy good, awesome hearing that they're back on the white!

Cheers Lightningx, they've definitely been great this week.

Thanks Sebb, haha! I think the last doughnut trip was maybe over a year ago! It's a beauty of a spot when it fires up!

Won't be any squid around but they'll be getting snapper.
Water should be churned up till Thursday.
