St Leonards Calamari + Minor Earthquake 05/11/2021

Post by Andrews » Sat Nov 06, 2021 3:54 pm

Hey everyone,

I wanted to give a quick update on the fishing and share this incredible session chasing the calamari @ the OG, St Leonards Pier.

CONDTIONS + TLDR
Fished 5-8pm, clear skies, 22C with a slightly murky run out tide. The calamari were on the bite in close to the pier with all of these babies being sight-casted. Caught 6, saw another 3 smaller ones caught. Jig choice was the: Yamashita EGI OH LIVE 038 3.0

Minor quake produced a set of 1-2M waves which looked like a swell/wake before hitting the pier/beach.

Started the session and with the clear skies, the jig choice was easy - You'll see why I love this foil, the holographic foil is sexy.

Started by casting the outside edge of the pier, only a short distance out and onto the weed bed. Let the jig sink 3/4 of the way and then aggressively tip and ran the jig over the sandy channel, before letting it sink further. Within three casts, two big squid follow it in! I hooked the first and landed it, the second got spooked and went elsewhere.

The next few casts were dry, but again that aggressive 5-7 tips and run actions had them chasing it and striking!
This one was pretty nice too.

Next few casts were hitting the edge of the reef, again pulling in a beauty.

Went back to my spot and cast out, let it sink 3/4 then tip and ran that bad boy right over the sand, had a few touches then the bloke next to me hooks up! He started winding in but left too much slack in the line, dropped the squid, but within 30s his mate took a liking to my jig.

Okay so the earthquake, so picture this conditions were glass out crazy, not a single boat out from the pier and then all of the sudden this big set of 8 or so 1-2M high 'wake' like waves start running across the pier. First smashed into the rocks giving a spray and the rest powered through - I was honestly so confused at the time and said to a few people who eerie it seemed, like what made the wake/swell like waves! Only realised once I got home of the minor quake.
Shame I didn't get footage, but here is what it was like closer to the epicentre, notice the waves appear and disappear. Like when you throw a rock in the water, the closer you are the point the sharper and closer together the waves are - as they travel the space out (like what I experienced).

Things started to get real slow, didn't see anyone get a bite from a fish or a touch of a squid for an hour.
Seeing that everyone was casting away form the pier and into the inner harbour, I went shallow to a spot that always holds squid when there is too much pressure elsewhere.

First cast and tipping it away form the boat and two squid follow dart out from the shadows and the first takes the jig.
GO-PRO started filming a few seconds too late for the first and accidently knocked it which explains the less ideal angle.

Nice, there's a few good ones there mate.
Interesting about the earthquake, I wonder if the video is the actuL quake itself or one of those rouge sets of waves that we get in PPB from time to time. If you fish on a boat in PPB you will.know exactly what im talking about.

Cheers Seb!
Yeah, I'll have to keep you update on how the pier has been producing.

Thanks Fishnut, yeah often I'll clean them on the beach and give the heads away to a few friends down the pier. Can't say I'm much of a bait fisher haha.

Thanks Lightningx, it's always great having a decent session of these!

That's a great point purple5ive, I ended up watching a good 30 mins either side of when the 'quake' happened and it was flat glass calm, the waves only appeared for a few minutes after the event. It was almost the same St Leonards, glass calm either side with a single set of waves. Strange either way!

Ouch, hope you recover quickly.
Was about to message you about Tim's cart. Was thinking to go to Mornington on Sat and I can meet up with you.

I’ll see I have a cast but if I can still reel in the lines and cast with a cast on for sure I’ll be out there
