Thumper Gars @ St Leonards

Post by Andrews » Fri Jun 11, 2021 9:00 pm

Some big gars tonight @ St Leonards, managed to net a few around the 30cm mark. Chunky too. They were sitting within 1ft of the surface.

Hundreds of smaller ones under the lights, hope they get to fatten up.
Didn't see any salmon chasing them, but they were a little spooked time to time.

How was the water? Dirty from the rain?

Surprisingly, it wasn't too murky, like 1m vis - I would have said after the 96KM+ gusts that it would be dirty as
Netx few days should make it cleaner

haha!
Hey Denis,

I knew you'd like to hear this update on the gars, the bigger ones were crusing right on the surface on the inner harbour under the lights while the smaller ones were along the concerete on the side without the lights.

Planning on going for some squid and gars this-afternoon/evening, should be a good session.

Mate I'm jealous.
If I could, I'd go there. Gonna have to wait another week at least. I need some squid and gars.

Quick update -

I went for a walk yesterday-morning and had a yarn to a friend down there, he didn't see any all morning.
I decided to fish the evening and my mate was still there, he fished 9am-5pm and only caught three medium sized squid. He didn't see any others caught.

I turned up around 5 and left by 7, saw a school of garfish maybe 30 in number but didn't get any bites by the light. Didn't see a single squid caught between those hours, along the pier (side without the lights) there were thousands and I mean thousands of baby salmon (5-10cm). I reckon with so much baitfish in the area, the squid are well fed and off the bite. Giving it a go again Monday night.

Cheeky little session today, caught 35 garfish all really nice sized. Two blokes hit bag limit in a few hours. Hardly any squid around - going to get some more during the week. Picture showing a few nice sized ones earlier in the session.

I'm in need for squid too. Hopefully the 25km be lifted soon.
