St Leonards Calamari 8/03/2021

Post by Andrews » Mon Mar 08, 2021 6:05 pm

Hey Everyone,

I wanted to share a quick update on the fishing @ St Leonards Pier in the past week.
It's that time of year when huge numbers of fingerling squid have moved into the pier and with these southerly winds keeping the water clean they're awesome fun sight casting!

They're averaging between 10-15cm with some of the bigger models punching 20cm+, anything larger than that have been really quiet and the nights have been producing bigger models. Trevally are schooling around the pier but remain easily spooked and some decent kgw were moving around the shallows.

March 6th, sunny day with a light S wind, super clean run out tide.
Starting with a little fun, enjoy my PB squid..

A little earlier in the day some smaller squid moved into the sheltered shallows, of course the smallest of the group grabs the jig first..

March 7th, sunny day, moderate S wind with a super clean run out tide.
First Cast and we've already got a squid following the jig!

For those who don't know IsoFishingLifestyle is running a competition on Instagram and Facebook to win limited edition Yamashita jigs!

Few more smaller squid for the day

Fished about 2 hours Sunday, no one else caught anything.. guess the white jig made the difference. Check out how chewed up it is!

Awsome vids mate, I caught a few too many squid on one of my yamashita jig that upon lifting a good squid out, the jig snapped from the head area where the eyes are. All that now remains is just the tip of the jighead with 2 little eyes staring at me. Atleast yours still intact lol

Hey mat with yamashita and the sponsorship do you get free jigs when you need them or do you still have to buy them?

@Nude Up, I've been saying that exact same thing to myself for months as it continues to get torn up. I had a look and it's only cosmetic at this point, prongs are still sharp and the squid seem to love it. I've had a brand new version of this model sitting in my EGI case for about a year now, might officially be time to retire it.

@Kenle! Cheers! Yeah it's definitely seem some damage! That jig has lasted me over a year, easily 100+ squid. Time to retire it. haha

@Lightningx Thanks! I'm enjoying filming the sessions, though I keep forgetting to turn the go-pro on half the time haha. Keen to get my gooseneck esky mount up and working to take those gory squid shots.

@e.welch, I've been pretty lucky to have had them send me a few jigs and majority of the jigs I fish with and ones I've paid for, or found diving. I have had incredible luck, touch wood with not loosing jigs. These are the same few jigs I purchased in Jan 2019, and they're all still going strong! haha
