Bellarine - A Calamari Success Story - 3 May 2025

Post by Andrews » Wed May 07, 2025 12:54 pm

Hey all,

Back out there chasing the calamari on the kayak!

Location and Conditons:
Bellarine, Saturday 3 May 2025, 7.30am - 11.00am
Light winds N with a little chop.
High tide running out.

Experience:

There’s nothing quite like the thrill of chasing calamari, especially when the conditions line up just right.
With perfect weather and strong numbers of squid around, I knew it was time to hit the water and make the most of it.

I started my session at sunrise, just as the high tide was rolling in—the ideal setup for finding squid on the hunt. Working the shallow, patchy ground, I cast my squid jig along the edges of sand breaks, and sure enough, the action was instant. Squid were firing, aggressively lunging at the jig, making for one of those golden mornings where the bite is hot from the get-go.

As the sun crept higher, though, the action started to slow.
Rather than packing it in, I switched up my approach—trolling the jig behind my kayak. This kept the lure moving naturally through the water, giving calamari the chance to chase it down before striking. And the adjustment paid off! Watching them attack the lure and hook onto their candles was an absolute rush, turning a fading bite into a full-on session again.

It wasn’t long before I hit my bag limit, wrapping up a morning that had it all—adrenaline, adaptation, and fresh squid for dinner.

If you’re keen to chase calamari, now’s the time. Get out there early, work the ground, and be ready to switch tactics if needed. The Bellarine is on fire, and you don’t want to miss it!

We should have a great supply of calamari over winter, with the larger models appearing as the weather cools.
