North Shore, flat and no red

Post by Sebb » Mon Nov 11, 2019 6:57 am

Despite the weather was bad on Saturday, missus and I went to the State Rose Garden Festival. Didn't take too long for us to pack our stuff and went back to the car. Grocery shopping, stopped by Op shop and cooked dinner.

Sunday however, was a different story. Much better weather. After a bit of sleep in and muesli breakfast with coffee, we went for lunch with couple friends. Missus was happy til I said it's a nice weather to fish on a yak. After fruitless Saturday she wanted to get more out of the weekend. Lucky I married the right woman, she was ver understanding and let me go fishing. She said "its your weekend too and I deserve a bit of me time too".

Messaged my fishing buddy, packed the yak and 30 mins drive to North Shore. Arrived and started fishing about 6:30pm.

Weather : cloudy 19 degrees
Wind : 20kmh west and dropping to 10kmh
Barometer : steady 1016
Water : 15-16 degrees
Moon : 98% (didn't check this)
Time fished : 6:30pm-9pm
Bait : squid head, pilchard, bluebait, raw chicken breast
Lure : DOA jerk shad, Gulp Nemesis 4" pumpkin seeds, Gulp nuclear chicken 5", with 1/8 #1/0 jig head.

This time I got the sounder to work! Worked perfectly, cruised along the rocks and the channel drop off. Aaaand.... Nothing! Nada, nil, zero, zilch... Apart from the drop offs, it was dead flat, no structure no fish nothing.... So decided to just blind fished it between the rock and the channel. Caught few undersized flathead on the chicken/bluebait. The Native propeller kept my hands free to cast, so was casting soft plastic while maintaining position using the rudder for the bait and easy casting.

Tap tap! ... And stopped... hhmmm that was the nemesis 4"... Stroked! Heavy! No much fight, no much run, gotta be a good sized flathead I thought. And yes a 43cm flathead. Was gonna release but since missus was being very nice, I took it home for a feed. She'd be happy. Caught few more undersized and a 31cm flathead. Was in the 9-12m water.

8:30pm and the flathead stopped biting. On the way back the sounder showed couple good arches around 6-7m. Would've been a good snapper. Dropped the bait and casted plastic, nothing... Moved, and again, couple good arches in the drop off 4-6m. Again, nothing.... But the plastic got a gentle thump around the weed bed, squid I thought. I casted squid jig and nothing, BUT, something tried to eat the 2.5 squid jig on the surface! A splashy boof! Twice!
Not sure what it was, but my mate yelled he saw whiting. So it could be a whiting tried to eat a 'prawn' on the surface. Or bream. Who knows. Put whiting snatcher with squid strip, but again, nothing.... Oh well. Got home around 11pm and went to bed mid night, up for work 6am. Zzzz... No red, but a flat. Bet its the full moon. :( Might try the east side around Mornington next.
Now I also need some squid for bait.

Yea I should try Avalon.
Saw the arches near the refinery pier thing in the 6-7m. But couldn't get them to bite. Decent arches too.
Unsure if it was the reason, but was 98% moon and low slack tide. No baro up/down either. Was just a flat evening.
Was nice easy fishing though. Just no red.

They were there! I saw them on the sounder. Couldn't get them to bite though. I should've taken a photo of the sounder screen. Was good couple arches sitting right on the drop.

Hopefully better luck next time on the reds

It could have been a snook/pike chasing the squid jig..

I know what you mean mate. I believe you don’t worry :P
My friend and I have been out many times and seen excellent marks but just couldn’t get a hook up!

Frustrating isn't it. And them in the shallow and on a drop off, they would've been feeding.
The big flatty spat like a baby snapper around 4cm btw. Probably from the baitball I saw on the sounder before my mate called dolphin!

Oh you could be right! Didn't think about that.
Though I did try the DOA shad and the Nemesis, it didn't take it. Should've tried a metal lure or shallow/surface hardbody.

Nice writeup; you should give Stingaree Bay a crack for flatties and whiting...

Thanks.
Never fished there before, good place within kayak distance?
Sat gonna be 20-25kmh south west wind, not a bad idea to fish stingaree bay. Straight out from the boat ramp?
As much as I want kgw, I also want a big red or two. Good for red there?
