Barwonheads

G'day guys n girls of this beautiful community, I usually don't post much about Barwonheads anymore because it's always the same species that I catch but thought this will help some parents who wants to get thier kids into fishing especially over the long school break and new years. Anyway, I organised a nice family bbq at Barwonheads area on boxing day with a lot of kids keen on hooking some fish, got there at 8am with bait all in almost immediately. Took only 1 minute for the first fish to land on the jetty, believe me when I say it was really noisey with excitement. The next 5 hrs went so quick and before we knew it, the esky was full of fish. Kids were all tired from screaming n yelling n prancing around so we called it a day leaving them biting. All up we kept over 60 fish, we threw back just as much on size n undersize fish aswell as lost a heap of nice size fish but each family got to take home a feed which was nice. Here's what you need to get onto them.
Rigs used: Paternoster rig with a small tear drop sinker, size 6 long shank hook. From sinker to leader about 500mm, leader to hook 300mm.
Rod n reel: small 6 ft 1-3 kg rod, size 2000 reel
Line class: 10lb mono (overkill but just incase)
Baits used: Chicken breast fillet cut into small strips the size of 2 match sticks together. Also effective was pilchard filleted and cut into similar shape and 4 match stIcks wide.
Best time: Early morning
Best tide: Right on low or high when waters not moving so fast.
Fish caught: puffer fish, Flathead, Tommy rough, baytrout (salmon), Gurnard, yellow eye mullet, silver trevaly, king george whiting and banjo shark.

Oh wow, look at those whiting. Sounds like you had a lot of fun.
I'm going to look for whiting tomorrow, will use size 6 hook, wish me luck.

Landbased mate, just off them small jettys close to the bridge. Saw some kids fishing off the actual bridge and pulling up fish as we drove pass. Also there were lots of swimmers and kayakers just sharing the beautiful waterway. Hope you hook a few mate

Went whiting fishing this morning. Used 1/0 KL and #6.
You're right, the #6 hook was good, outperformed the 1/0 KL.

Wow mate what a session! Kept over 60 fish landbased! Doesn’t get much better than that! Well done

Western Port.
