Fly Fishing For Cod

Post by mazman » Sun Dec 27, 2020 12:54 pm

Hey guys,

Something a bit different this time round. Another session exclusively fly fishing for cod off the kayak and then a quick session with the baitcast gear the morning after. My conversion rate is rather poor and there's a lot of lessons I'm learning with fly fishing for cod but it feels great to have ticked off one of my major goals for the cod season on my second trip.

Yeah its a 2020 outback. Rod is a sage bass II largemouth, runs off grain weight for the line. From memory its around the 9/10 weight area but would have to look it up to know for sure

I see, gotta be heavy outfit. That surface fly looks big and heavy.
Been wanting to take my fly rod for cod but I think I will struggle to cast that kind of big heavy fly on my 6wt Sage :P

Went there couple times last summer, caught a yellowbelly, it's better when it's low and slow I reckon.

What area should I be fishing along the Goulburn there? Is there a track?

A 6 weight isn't going to be able to cast these flies. I've pushed my 6 weight casting some larger flies at eps but these are another level.

Havent been recently but been some good reports from the Goulburn lately. Can be a little trick landbased but know a few who do it and get results. Plenty of roads and tracks down to the river there, don't think any one in particular is better than the others
