Acheron - 07/09
Without winding this up into being a big story, I'll try to keep it short.
Scored an invite with a mate to go camping at Acheron for the opening of Trout season on the 7th. I'm not usually a freshwater fisher-person, only for the lack of knowledge on where to go, so I put together some kit that resembles being useful in freshwater.
Dropped the missus of at work at 7am on Saturday and off I go... Acheron is about 60'ish kms past Healsville (or near to Alexandra), I arrived around 9.30am and did my first scout around whilst waiting for my mate to arrive. Seeing's the water enthused me enough to had back to the car, pull out the surf waders, grab some kit and throw some spinners about. On a side note I was surprised Fisheries were on the ball and out and about through the bushland checking licences. Eventually the mates arrive, and we setup camp at the Breakaway Twin Rivers Caravan Park..... our camp spot was at the rivers edge and just a stones throw-away. the park owner tells us that Fisheries did a stocking just here in Acheron 2-3 days ago so I got busy casting the spinners and hard bodies all around, thank god I took the waders they are a necessity in the cold water.. During the course of the afternoon I witnessed about 6-7 hookups and landings of the fisher-folk in and around the river. ALL of the fish landed were Rainbows in excess of 45cm... . Absolute monsters. Whilst I caught donuts I did help a fellow net and land his monster trout. This fellow was shouting out for help with a net, so I dashed over and netted it for him and brought it to shore. This fish had to have been verging on 50cm, I've never seen a trout this big.... HUUGE! One of my mates took a photo of me landing it in the net, and tried to creatively neglect to show the real owner in the photograph. Not sure if this shoudl have counted as my catch or not( well I landed it :super: ) .... perhaps I should have insisted on a trophy photo .
Sunday morning and its grey skies again, I hit the water again at 7am and decide to trek the far bank of the river in hope for a perfect spot. In the end realized that folk were catching stonking monster trout just outside the camp why the f*&%k am I trekking two miles away. So head back to base, and spend the next 3 hours chucking the lures about.Alas no luck for me on this morning either, but did again witness a good half dozen landings of very decent sized fish.
Headed home empty handed, but now armed with enough knowledge to return later in teh month to give it another crack..... might even bring the missus.

Re: Acheron - 07/09
50cm is huge for a wild trout not in a dam... Wow
Also I had massive Deja Vu reading this thread. I had to triple check the date and time to make sure it wasn't bumped from years ago.

Re: Acheron - 07/09
Apparently ( I heard this second hand from my mate who spoke to the caravan park owner) Fisheries released 150 Rainbow Trout that were 45cm+.
So yeah, these were definitely not wild wild....

Goulburn... All the landings I saw were right next to the caravan park downstream of the Breakway Road Bridge

At least you tried mate!
about 1500 rainbow trout were released into the goulburn, with about 90 of them weighing close to 5kg. so plenty of big models to catch

I used to camp there 50 years ago (no caravan park then)
We lived on fish and rabbits, mainly rabbits
When the weather warms up, I'll be there
