A report about...nothing!

Post by April Fool » Mon Sep 17, 2018 6:35 pm

Hi all
I went on a carp hunt last Friday, a bit further upstream than I normally go in a system of creeks I fish often. Despite the dry conditions here in northern Victoria I knew there would be good flow in this system as it is used for irrigation. This small channel ends it trip from the Murray river and starts its journey in the creek.

Other channels also feed in from the Goulburn system so there is a chance of scoring native fish in here. The creek has been stocked with yellas over the last year so the future looks good. The plan of attack was to use corn as bait to start with and then use shrimp or yabbies which I was confident of getting a few on the day...I was wrong! Therefore using corn was likely going to limit me to catching carp.

Despite being a shallow creek, there are plenty of snags if one wanted to get up close and personal for some hand to fin combat (read walk along and cast short distances...I don't really mean get in there and belt 5hit out of the fish)!

My choice was to sit on my fat ar5e and fish the junction where the creek was a bit wider. My only reason to fish here was the ease of access.

I caught...wait......for......it....nothing! At the end of the session I removed the same corn from the hook that started the session on the hook!!!! No carp were harmed during this session! Assuming I was going to get bait from the creek was a mistake.

I prefer to fish a high and rising barometer and it was far from it on the day. I didn't pay too much attention to the weather prior to planning the trip as I had the day off so I was going regardless. Next time I will pay a bit more attention to the weather when I go. If it is not ideal, I will not travel as far and therefore save some dollars and give me more fishing time in what may be tough conditions.
cheers

I went out Friday evening for a session. The plan was to get a yella on this!
Lure 60.jpg
This part of the plan did not suceed!!!! The lure chucking was also going to give me time to allow some shrimp or yabbies to accumulate in my bait trap. This was also a dismal failure! I am not sure what is happening this year but my bait collecting attempts have varied greatly wih most times being a dismall failure!!! I made the same mistake as the previous trip...went confident of getting bait and failed. The few small shrimp I did get on Friday were sent out to do their job but apart from a couple decent bites it was a failure.

There has been a noticable abundance of very small 'bites' of late...perhaps from small redfin. I generally don't bother downsizing to chase the little critters but if they continue, my curiousity may get the better of me!
