Lakes entrance - prawning / fishing

Post by Joker91 » Mon Jan 17, 2022 2:11 pm

Heading to lakes entrance this Saturday and staying for 4 nights.

My main goal for the trip is to attempt prawning. I have my light ready and am going to go buy a prawn net from bcf later this week.

Would any one be able to provide some directions as to where some good spots are to catch prawns?

Also, any information on spots for pier and surf fishing would be appreciated. Baits, line set up etc?

Thank you!!

I had seen that post and there was definitely some good content in there.

Because it’s 7 years old I am sure some things have changed.

There are prawns around but the water is very dirty . Pick a flood Tide and try areas close to the entrance.
There's nothing . . . absolutely nothing . . . half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats.

Is flood tide when the tide hits its peak high and low tide (that’s my understanding from a quick google search)?

And what do you mean by close to the entrance? I’ve marked what I think you mean on yellow. Is that right ?

Basically the bits marked in green. They are the shallow areas. You can walk across the footbridge to access the other side of the lake

Thanks re-tyred, I’ll give it a crack once I get there.

Fishnut - does that mean there will be less prawns out and about or are you saying there won’t be any? Unfortunately, I can’t move the dates so weather or not it’s the right time, I will need to make do.

Prawns are around all month, but are harder to catch on the bright nights. Flood Tide is when the seawater runs in the entrance. You can go to Gippsland ports site for current monitoring. Best times are later at night with the peak during the early hours of the morning. If you fail to catch a feed, the commercial guys are getting some outside and will have them for sale in the morning.
