Awesome swordfish

These guys did well. There have been a few coming in each fine spell

Yep, that's one hell of a sword. Would have been glad they had the 60kg line while they were hooked up to that!

Are they not really targeted / caught anywhere else?

Why do people travel from so far to fish the canyon for swords?

It’s really the only place in Victoria you get them with any regularity. I have heard rumours of a couple getting caught off Portland and longline boats sometimes getting them off Port Mac but Lakes would be the main location.

Tassie has more and they’re more accessible due to the proximity of the shelf but taking your boat across on the ferry is extremely expensive.

So they don’t really travel further east up the coast from lakes / the canyon? I thought they’d maybe be out from Mallacoota at the shelf? But hardly ever hear of them caught anywhere other than lakes…. Must be starting to get too warm for them elsewhere

Yes you can catch them off Mallacoota but it is almost as far to the grounds as from Lakes and a lot further to drive. They are caught up the NSW coast sometimes.
