Lakes entrance - land based fishing and crabbing suggestions

Post by sweetstarneon » Sat Nov 14, 2020 7:37 am

Hi everyone

In 2 weeks time, i will be heading to lakes entrance for a very long weekend. :)

Never been at this time of year and am going with people who have never been fishing or crabbing before.

Would love people's thoughts on the following:

1. How is the land based crabbing this year around lakes entrance? Should i even bring my crabbing nets with me (particularly to introduce my travelling party to this pasttime)? Any suggested spots or tips?

I went a few years ago and brought my nets to try my luck at bullock island and never caught a single crab. So have been a bit shy to visit ever since.

2. How is land based fishing at lakes entrance at the moment? Should i bring fishing gear to introduce my travelling party to fishing? Any suggested spots or tips?

3. Leaving the fishing aside, is there a must do place to visit or see that you would recommend in/around lakes entrance? Really want to knock out my travelling party into persuading them to come back to this region again, as it will be their first time here.

Thanks in advance for any thought, suggestions and tips and take care. :tu: :wt:

We came in from offshore yesterday (don’t ask..only 10’s of gurnard) and anchored up around Nungurner, plenty of crabs stealing our baits. They were about the size of your palm - appreciate it if you thin them out a bit :-)

Bit hard for land based crabs as the best spot is up near barrier landing. Could get the water taxi to take you up there and try from the jetty. Be worth a fish for whiting too. I would expect the water temp to be around 18 or better within 2 weeks. So footbridge for kingfish with lures. There are two places there that are best. First is close to the shore on the surf beach end. Deep channel there. Also on the south side of footbridge walk along the beach to the east. There is a spit of sand that has a deep channel next to it. This is past all the paddle boat hire places.
There's nothing . . . absolutely nothing . . . half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats.

Hi everyone, thanks for your post. Am i able to catch crabs from the barrier landing jetty (it's not private)? Also, where can i hire a water taxi from?

Is the north arm worth fishing at this time of the year? Will be staying in that vicinity on the lakes entrance side.

Are there any crabs around at the moment?

Thanks
Patty

North arm is worth a go for flatties. Just google lakes water taxi. Barrier landing is a public jetty. Only accessible by boat. Good for crabs and whiting

Hopetoun Channel on the south side of Rigby island is the best place for crabbing. You could hire a boat from the boat hire places along marine parade or get the water taxi to take you to barrier landing jetty. Worth fishing there too.

Access to LB fishing in the North Arm. End of Capes Rd, short walk to the water. Clara St drive to waters edge. Footy oval walk in. These are known flatty spots because there isn't much boat traffic. Forget it around the boat ramps, almost never see fish caught there.
Jetties around town can be good in the early hours of the morning while it is quiet
