Flathead offshore.

Post by re-tyred » Thu Oct 22, 2020 11:44 am

Thought I would take a look for flatties along the beach this morning. Headed over the bar at daylight and went just 1 mile to the south. Stopped in 18 meters and sent a Pilly and some squid down. While rigging up a second rod the first one started nodding up and down. I gave it a moment then a quick flick and it loaded up with that familiar lazy head shakes. A minute later first flatty for this season was flapping around on the deck. No giant, just 32 cm.
20 minutes later I had six all similar size. It went quiet for a bit, then big bend on one rod, bit of tug, then just heavy with occasional tugs. No surprise when a bulleye gurnard pops up. Followed in quick succession by about 10 more.
Tried a few other depths but all the same, gurnard, gurnard and more gurnard, then a heavy hook up feeling a bit like a shark. Phht, carpet shark. A very cool easterly was starting to make life a little unpleasant so I headed in for a coffee. Another feed, so not complaining. Water temp is around 15c so should be getting better from here on.

There's nothing . . . absolutely nothing . . . half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats.
