We are off, winter fishing Lakes Entrance
Well as you would expect, when the ban was lifted the weather was rubbish. Had to wait till today to get a decent day for offshore fishing.
6-30am out the door to load the bait and rods and it's freezing. Grabbed an extra coat and beany, and went to the ramp. There were a few hardy souls but generally pretty quiet. With gloves on and beany pulled down over my ears, plus two coats and a lifejacket, I felt a bit bulky. There was a screaming ebb tide so I went down the channel along side the rocks to dodge the worst of the tide wash. I didn't want to get a wetting down.
Crossed the bar no issue and pointed to a spot about 7nm offshore, that is often pretty good in the colder months. I hunched up behind the console to get out of the wind as I sat on a comfortable 18knt.
25 minutes later I was there. Sounder looked ok a bit of stuff showing on top of the rocks. Baited up and sent it down.
Not a minute after it hit the bottom, before I could organise another rod, and it bends over. Bit of a fight obvious snapper knock knock, and up comes a reasonable fish. Measured it at 42cm. I was drifting and was away from the rocks so organised both rods baited with squid and pillies, then cruised back 100mtrs. Over they went a few minutes to drift back and bang both rods bend over. 5 minutes and fish 2 and 3 are flapping around the floor. Bit smaller mid 30's. The next half an hour was repeat the previous procedure a few times.
End result 3 x 40cm + , 5 between 30 and 40cm and 1 mowong. It was just past 9am when I pointed the boat to land and headed in.
pretty happy with that after 7 weeks off.
Water temp is way down now 14.5 deg. I might even have another go tomorrow.

There's nothing . . . absolutely nothing . . . half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats.

Wow what a great read on what was a great morning to get back into the swing of things
And a perfect mix of Snapper, pannies, baking and even Webber sized too
On the pulling the beanie over the ears, it seemed that cold in the morning, I would have pulled that beanie down to my waist and called it an extra jumper.
Hope you do get out tomorrow too Mike
Lov ya work
Cheers, Bugs

Back into it nicely, well done, cheers davo
It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish
But it's an even better feeling releasing them

Funnily enough I went out from Lakes this morning too, only not so early, but boy it was still cold. Before the lock down I had been getting a few whiting and flatties so I went to check out the spot, and hoping for a stray gummy maybe. The water had cooled off so the action was slow, I was fishing inshore, still a few flatties about but you have to work through plenty of small ones to get a feed. I headed out deeper to hopefully find something bigger, but all I got was gurnards and draughtboard sharks.
Cheers

Nice to get back into the swing of things. I woke up the other morning with ice all over my car.. As much as i love fishing, I'm not looking forward to how cold the mornings are going to be.
Cheers, Anth
