A 5am launch from Lakes today was a waste of a Good lie in. That said, and while piscatorially disappointing, it was another pleasant morning afloat with the Usual Suspect/latest model Offsider (even though the sunrise, like the fishing action, was less than spectacular owing to overcast conditions).Despite local Intel advising us to visit "The Lump " 25km SE of LE out from The Grange, and or the Bluff /Redbluff, we fished straight out on the 6 mile reef for multiple Gurnard only. We did see another boat a few km's SE of us which we met up with later at the Bluff. They had bagged out on Snapper (6) to about 55cm and had moved looking for another species. They asked us for directions to the KGW, I suggested taking the South Gippy highway to Westernport! Obviously not local! On that note, heard that Fisheries think it was a bad spawning year for the KGW hence the current no show! Anyway we started at 18m and moved in progressively to 6m for a total of 3 Port Jacksons, a couple of Pinkies and 6 mid 30's flathead (12m line).Highlight of the day was almost catching something good; rod bending bite,a brief enthusiastic struggle on both our parts and... then ...Ping..broken pre covid braid. Oh.. and seeing a whale + calf pass within 50m of us. Although it was a areasonably calmish day for Offshore, after multiple moves the 0.5-1m swell was more than bouncy enough for us senior types (especially my arse & back),so we headed in mid morning, suitably knackered but ahead of the forecast change. Hard work this early morning lark...
That said, next week will no doubt see us heading out once more and turning right towards the Grange area...maybe a bit slower (driver please note),and definitely a bit later.

So finally managed a bag of fish today. 1 pinky, 1 mowie, 2 gummies, 15 flatties.
For a bit of extra excitement, my line took off at a rather disturbing rate. Luck has it, it was on my rod with my alvi vintage 40 yo real. The line came from 22mtrs to the surface as 100 mtrs spooled off.😱 tightened the brake expecting smoke to come out. Then slackline, it's off, nope just coming back like a steam train. It's quite a challenge to wind an Alvi quickly. Just as I caught up it took off out the the side and out screamed the 50mtrs I had recovered. Then we have aero shark burst out of the water flew through the air for 3- 4 mtrs then plunged back in and zoomed off. We identified it as about 2- 3 mtr thresher. It was very upset about the hooks sticking into it. Several more awesome jumps, then back towards the boat. For a fleeting moment I thought we would get it alongside, but another acrobatics display 25 mtrs from the boat and the clip attaching the rig finally said enough is enough. The line went slack as it did one more leap with all my tackle it's new jewellery and it was gone. That's the 3rd big thing I have hooked this week
There's nothing . . . absolutely nothing . . . half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats.

Hi re-tyred what depth were the Flathead in please. I fished around 15 to 20 m two days back for just 3 Flatties around the 40 cm mark and one rather small but legal Gummy - with an empty freezer at the moment all fish are welcome LOL.
