Fat Squid from Rye - Sorrento Landbased 25-28/07/2019

Post by whambamsam » Sun Jul 28, 2019 11:12 pm

Went away for the weekend down to Sorrento, brought my gear thinking I'd try to hit up some new spots that I'd never fished before and explore the area. Just got some new tackle - Emeraldas MX 86ML and MX 2508-H-DH reel - so itching to break them in.

My last few posts have all been donuts, actually had a few more donut days that I didn't even bother reporting here, but finally broke the drought. Caught at least 1 good sized (30cm+) squid every day for the last four days. Mix of Rye, Sorrento, and Blaigowrie piers.

The new rod and reel are fantastic, completely blow my previous combo out of the water (Rovex Specialist Squid and Sienna reel). I can really feel what's going on with the jig and actually get some proper action onto it. So much more fun catching these bigger squid as well on the lighter rod, they've really got some weight going on them.

Sadly I lost a few superstar jigs whilst I was up there, but definitely worth it!

Well done! Good to eat and great bait.
What do you plan to do with the squid?
I usually eat the hood and keep the head as bait for snapper season.

Salmon are around the BG area - in shallow on the beaches, look for the seal and if he's around then the Salmon aren't far behind (or in front I should say).

Whambamsam, great choice! I have an Emeraldas Stoist/Certate combo and like you said; you feel everything even in average conditions.

Well done buddy i have the Emeraldas mx 86ml it,s a fantastic rod to use so much fun you can feel everything you know when you pickup weed on your jig so you just wind back in fast clean the jig and send it back into battle.

Makes me want to get Emeraldas rod.
How much diff is the Emeraldas and the Emeraldas MX? The MX is like $100 more.
