South channel gumbo

Post by Haygmbp » Tue Jan 06, 2015 8:46 am

Hey peeps thaught id post up a report finally. With snapper season being dismal for me and having done well on the ting over xmas at westernport decided it was time to chase the gummy sharks that call southern ppb home. Launched at 4.30pm from martha cove and fresh bait was the 1st stop.

Last cast of the sephia 14c and this bad boy came along......fresh bait was sorted

Got to our mark at roughly 6.30 and as soon as baits hit bottom they were getting ravaged by micro pinkies. It still amazes me how aggressive they can be, lucky we had plenty of bait.

Between the pinkie bites did manage a eagle ray which went like a steam train and the ever present banjos but just as the sun was setting the tell tale bite of a gummy was transmitted thru the braid to the rod tip...bounce bounce bounce baaang shes on!! After a great battle got her in the boat and 7/0 circle fell out! Some happy snaps and back in the water to she went.

Decided to call it quits after that. Wound in the other lines and look what was hanging on!! 68cm and dinner was sorted! Thanks for reading 1st time attaching pics so hope everything comes out ok. Tight lines

Great session mate. That is a stonker of a flatty...you not think about keeping the gumbo, or was she too near breeding size..?

Hey Carl. 90% of my gummies are released unless they r in the smaller sizes. Just cant justify killing anything bigger just to sit in the freezer or worse still bust my balls catching then cleaning then trying to give it away to friends and family so it can sit in their freezer. I use 40lb braid these days as the fight is generally shorter and IMO fish are being released alot stronger then with a drawn out fight on 20lb like i used too. And just incase some of you are thinking overkill?? Ive been spooled and bitten off on 100lb leader more times then i care to remember!
