Southern Calamari Squid Tips & Tricks

Hints: Squid are rarely found far from shelter, even when they are out hunting at first and last light. Areas which squid find attractive are naturally occurring formations like patches of reef, sometimes quite small patches, mussel beds, sea grass meadows and kelp beds. Squid are also attracted to man made structures like rock breakwaters, jetty pylons, mussel leases and boat moorings.

Possession limit of 10 southern calamari applies in Victoria.

Nice photo.

The biggest squid I have caught weighed about 1.5 kgs, caught on a large orange Ray's Outdoors squid jig. The Rod was just sitting in the rod holder in the boat and we were drifting, over a well known area of reef.

Thought the jig had snagged and reeling it in, I though I had a large lump of seaweed.
