Squid Rig Set-Up

Post by Greg.Pap » Mon Nov 25, 2019 8:11 pm

Hi guys,

For squid fishing is it better to tie the leader to a swivel that connects to the mainline, or to tie the leader directly to the mainline? I'm not sure which one to pick as I'm afraid that the knot connection of a leader to braid may damage the rod guides.

I use swivel usually to prevent line twist. Squid jig doesn't really twist.
I always tie main braid line to leader, no swivel. No issue.
Depends what knot and how thick the line you're using. A 10 lb leader line tied to a 10 lb braid shouldn't make a knot big enough to damage rod guides. If you worry much, use FG knot.

I tie an fg knot. Current squid rod has probably had the same leader on it for the last year or so.

It’s pretty quick and easy to tie once you have worked it out.

Easy fix if your scared of breaking your guides is casting with your leader knot outside the guides :tu:

I think you’re more likely to damage the tip guide on the swivel than you are on a knot. The others suggestions are all good. Can get away with a swivel if you’re not actively fishing the jig I guess (like under a float or using it as a sleeper) I suppose. I personally use an fg knot for my leader, about a rod lengths of 8-15lb mono and a size 00 clip for attaching jigs.

Also double uni knot, snap swivel on the end to help with line twist and changing jigs.

Agree with a double uni knot, 10lb braid to 10lb clear mono leader.
I run about 45cm of leader as I'm land-based with plenty of weed and reef, anything shorter and I've struggled with releasing snags.
