Quickie at Kerferd pier yesterday 26/3/23

Who does not like a bit of a quickie. As in a quick short session without much preparation :-D

The plan was to go to Vic central highlands and fish for trout. But wife got sick and only ended up with 45 min sneaky fishing while doing errands for her. So I went to kerferd pier. Been a while since the last time I went there. Saw probably about 20 people fishing.

Tested the gekka air tw baitcast finesse reel and infeet z 1-4kg rod, PE0.6 line.

.
Wind was a south wind and fished incoming tide 6:15pm-7:00pm.

Landed a little flathead, dropped a salmon at around 30cm, and dropped a pinkie. All on zman slim swimz bad shad with 1/8 1/0 jighead and sfactor.

Both rod and reel were amazing, felt great while fighting and casting 1/16 and 1/8 jighead.

.
Saw an old man with his wife caught two decent flatties, probably 40-45cm with half pilchard and paternoster rig. Looks like a 2/0 octopus hook and 2 oz sinker.
Saw people pulling few small pinkies on chicken too.
Definitely good time to go fishing atm there with close to new moon, incoming tide in the evening, south wind, etc.

You make running errands fun. Shame you didn’t make it to the trout streams.

Yeah, I wished I did trout fishing instead.
Oh well, I'm sure the mrs and the kid needed me more than the trout. Haha.

Nice setup. Do you ever have a problem with the line knot catching the micro guides?

I have a few bfs rods with micro guides but if I am using braid to leader, the knot (FG knot) will often catch the guides when casting 1/16th and lighter

Thanks.

Not really.
In short summary, use thinnest line possible and balance them. E.g. thin braid but thick leader is bad idea.

I use thin line. Like PE0.5 braid and 8lb fluorocarbon leader. The fluorocarbon leader lines have thickness rating too.
Try use thinnest possible, not only preventing knot hitting the guides, but also makes better casting.

Note: I don't even use FG knot for 10lb line and under. FG knot use like a grip style and with thin line there isn't much to grip. The thickness of e.g. slim beauty won't be much diff with FG. Or even double uni on 6-8lb line isn't much diff. Easier to tie too.
