Gummy shark doo doo doo doo, another port melb on a yak

Last minute decision after checking the wind forecast late yesterday.
Contacted my mates with kayak and none available so I went alone. Left home 2:30am to fish early before the south wind and rain come. Plan was to get a mega red. "The knobby mega red cure".

Stopped by petrol service, red bull, banana bread and 1kg pilchard. Got on the water at 3:30am. Around 12° air temperature.

Time fished : 3:30am-8am
Moon : 50%, set 1:58am, rise 11:34am
Barometer : 1010 and decreasing slightly
Tide : 3:15am low, 8:45am high
Wind : NE less than 10kmh

2-4 kg rod, 2500 reel, 10 lb line, zman slim swimz bad shad and gulp shad 5 in nuclear chicken, 1/8 jighead.

4-7 kg rod, 3000 reel, 20 lb line, 4/0 KL hook, half pilchard, small running ball sinker.

5-9 kg rod, 4000 reel, 30 lb line, 6/0 KL hook, squid head, small running ball sinker.

Few minutes to the spot, around 100m from the rocks in 5-6m water and tap tap bzzzzssttt! Left right center, tangled the other line, while my left hand was still holding my 2-4 kg rod, trying to grab the net at the same time. Got on the surface and doing the death roll, got itself tangled wrapped around tight like Coles' roast ham roll.

A gummy in the net (partial length 50cm), took the squid head. I usually release gummy but took this one home for the missus.

For those who doesn't know partial length is the last gill to the base of the tail, that's to measure their legal size. Gummy is 45cm min partial length to be legal to take home.

Another few mins in, i was checking the bait on the 4-7 kg rod and bbbzzztttt, second gummy. It took the squid head on the 5-9 kg rod but happened to be tangled on my 4-7 kg rod, so i was fighting it on the wrong rod!
Got tangled everywhere and had to pull by hands into the net (phew*), 58cm partial length.
Made bigger longer runs but not much head shake nor the death roll like the first one. Was going to release but a mate wanted it to feed his family so I took this one too. Don't usually take gummy otherwise.

Re-rigged the gear and back with the squid head. Few mins in and the half pilchard got another 'gummy hit', was swimming and fighting like a gummy, but happened to be a small ray.

Re-rigged (again), another few mins in and slow pull bending the rod and bbbzzztttt, thought I was gonna get a hattrick, but nah, was a banjo, pulled hard for a banjo.

Those happened between 4-5:30am. Then tap tap here and there on both bait and plastic, undersized pinkie, and that was it.
Wind change came, felt the cold breeze and 'wet' smell in the air. Though just a breeze, it shut them down.
Not much going on 6-8am, started to drizzle, wind started to get stronger blowing south.

Good arches every now and then but no red. School if fish on the bottom, probably small pinkies but even they weren't aggressive.

Funny how there were times I wanted to get a gummy so much and spent so much effort for many moons with no results. And when I wanted a snapper, I caught two gummies in a row.

Thanks. I'm pretty familiar with the place and not going too far off the land, got PLB, bright light and all, so I was very confident. Couple boats got there before me too.
I won't go to an unknown place 3:30am alone for sure.

I always been releasing them, this is the first time I took home, gonna be my first attempt to fillet it. Any tips? Or a good instruction video?

I might've butchered it.
From 2.6 kg cut and bled gummy, became only 1 kg flake.
