EP flick

Post by happyfriggincamper » Thu Dec 31, 2020 10:06 am

Short report.

Got a pocket of time to get away from some home duties these holidays and headed out to flick some lures on the kayak.

I started out casting my newly bought rmg 35mm suspending scorpions at snags. Impression wasn't great from putting them on the fast attach clip - didn't notice in the shop but they have a plastic tow point on the bib which the thickness is impossible to put a fast attach clip on. I tried putting a small wire clip on to the tow point for the fast attach clip, but this upset the suspending buoyancy. Nevertheless I continued to try and break one in.

Took a while to figure out their optimal retrieve, very finesse and slow roll required to get them down to their 1.3m range, anything fast will see them turn to their side and dart up. OK to do this when at depth - but not getting down. After about 30min I had my first hit about 2m from the kayak, saw an EP swipe it after likely following it out from its snag. At least I had confirmation they worked.

Another 30min and a number of snags that were surely holding fish, I was at one snag where I'd put in 10 or so casts and decided to switch to my "confidence" lure - a 5cm suspending Berkley flicker shad and first cast brought in an EP of about 20ish+ cm.

Continued working the water - had two missed hook ups on the flicker shad until it got snagged. Worked over to it, tried to work it out then resorted to the dead lift and leader broke and it was gone...back to the rmg scorpion.

Rest of the session I got two more EPs of about 20ish+cm and 3 missed hook ups, so some confidence was build in the scorpion despite the tow point PITA and finesse approach required to get down.

Nice little session. Good to know those lures worked too. No need for $20 ecogear sx40
We should go there with a light fly gear, would be so much fun :D
