Gummies at Campbells Cove?
Gummies at Campbells Cove?
Hi,
I'm still hoping to catch my first gummy and went out early on Sunday in about 6m off the RAAF base. Burleyed hard and waited, waited, waited. Nothing. After a few hours, I decided drifting for flathead and picked up two very nice bluespots - one of which was 50cm+. I was inspired by a fella at the filleting station about 6 weeks ago who came in with a couple of gummies and a bag of nice flathead, and he kindly advised that he'd caught them near the RAAF base. Any advice on the what type of ground I should be looking for, what depth I should be fishing, and what time of day/night in order to maximise my chances of landing a gummy?
Cheers

When I caught my gummy on my kayak, it was straight out from those beach houses, wasn't close to the raaf pier.p_dubs wrote: ↑Tue May 16, 2023 4:46 pmHi,

In the afternoon i was catching flathead and when it got dark when I caught the gummy. Squid head as bait, 5/0 circle hook on running sinker rig. I reckon it was like 7m water. It's generally pretty flat there.

Re: Gummies at Campbells Cove?
Thanks Sebb. Must have been quite something to land a gummy in a kayak! Maybe I'll have a crack off the beach huts next time. Really appreciate the info.

Re: Gummies at Campbells Cove?
Yeah was awesome experience.
If you could, try to catch some squid there first. Around RAAF. And use as bait.

Re: Gummies at Campbells Cove?
They get them landbased at night off the beach there, so I'd say you'd get gummies all day in 7m+.
Or in close at night.
Any structure, weebed or reefs always helps.

No need to burly boat based.
Just troll catch fresh salmon, pike....trrevally n parrot fish.
Smell of fresh Salmon blood will attract the gummies.
Flick plastic or squid jigwhile u wait for bites.
Caught gumies during day , a few hundred meters either side of channel .

Thanks Longbombs. I thought i had to find a drop off, but broken ground seems to be OK.

Thanks Boogie. Sage advice. Hope to have a crack next weekend, conditions permitting.
