Another quick session of yarra river bream with a surprise
When : Tue 9/2/2021
Where : Yarra river close to CBD
Target : bream
Time : 6:30pm-9:00pm, new moon low tide.
Gear : 3-8lb rod, 2000 reel, 4lb braid, 3m fluorocarbon leader 4lb.
Lure : zman grub 2in motor oil, 1/28 hidden weight jig head #2 and scents.
Technique : cast, let it sink, read the drift, keep the line tight but without moving the lure much, the lure should sit still on the bottom, angle the rod for the tip to pick any subtle bites, super slow roll and long pause, keep the line tight to keep in contact with the lure, often or not they pick the plastic while sitting on the bottom. Refresh the scent often.
Had 2 hrs after work and before had to pick up the mrs. As usual, stopped by yarra for a quick session. Didn't bother checking the weather etc, just wanted to have a break for the day.
Super low tide, water was a bit murky as yarra mostly be.
Had few taps here and there, hooked and dropped some.
And the last bite just before sunset was a baby mulloway, what a surprise.
It had a 'typical' mulloway fight, even for a small one. First run was out and fast away from me, then felt the 'drop and slack', its because the second run was going towards me.
Landed it on the black mud bank (stink as), quick photos and went back into the drink. No bream landed.

Thanks. Yarra fish is definitely easier to fool compared to Nong and Docks.
Loving my Infeet + gekka reel at the moment

That's a great session Seb, I like the way you worked the plastic, very clever, let the water do the working and keep the line tight enough to see or feel the little bites, well done on the Mulloway

I learnt it when I fished clear water and any sudden movement spooked them, also few times I saw a fish took a bite and yet I felt nothing on my hand and learnt that it must be the slack line, whether be because of wind, current, didn't wind enough onto the reel, etc. In which sometimes we can't avoid. Let it natural seems the best.
Imagine how many bites missed because of not keeping tight line and not in contact with the lure (learnt this while fly fishing for trout, that fly anglers missing bites because the trout can spit a nymph without the anglers knowing).
I got lucky on the mulloway.

Awesome report mate, do you think they are naturally recruited mulloway? If so that’s a great sign
