25/6/2019 Squid Session

Post by Lightningx » Fri Jun 28, 2019 1:50 pm

Hi Guys, this is a report from a few days ago.

With some nice calm days forecasted for earlier on in this week, I got a call from a mate of mine to try for some squid locally.

We both arrived at the ramp around 1:30pm and after launching, headed over to a spot we have done well in the past.

The wind I think was a NNW, which allowed for a nice easy drift over some nice ground.

We decided to use a mix of different coloured squid jigs all in size 3.0. I used a white jig with a rattle, while my mate used a black jig and we also left a green jig out the back of the boat.

It really didn't take long before I got the first squid. Then after that we were picking up squid on each drift. There was no stand out jig. They were all catching :P

We moved to another location to see if there were any around and we did get a couple but not as successful so headed back to our original spot and drifted once again.

Stayed for a couple of hours before my mate got a call from his missus saying he had to lock up the work office so had to head back in.

We ended up with our bags and arrived back at the ramp. When we got back, we had a chat to another guy who had been out for 5-6 hours all over without much success with his daughter. They were also targeting squid. They both seemed nice and friendly and so we gave them 4 squid from our catch which they were very happy about.

Wasn't the longest trip but a fun trip out on the water. All squid were caught in 3-5 metres of water :)

Hopefully another trip isn't too far away! :)

So jealous!!

I havent been able to get out for weeks now. I was going to go on Wednesday, but had to cancel and it turned out to be a beautiful day. Anyway, great report mate and its good to see the squid are still about (as always). Im still probably another week and half from being able to hit the water due to work.

Thanks Anth.
Haha yea dinner was definitely sorted. I shared my catch with my family though. Gave some to my dad and sister and her family too :)
Always launch from St Kilda mate as my boat is permanently there. Works out well for me as I only use around 6 litres of fuel to get to my spot and back :P
Cheers

Great day out there LX. And a haul of squid is always good for the dinner table (or dinner tables as with your generosity).

That Father & Daughter would have driven off saying the same thing you said "they both seemed nice" about you and your mate. Well done
